PNEUMOLOGY
Lung and respiratory tract diseases are treated by a physician specialized in PNEUMOLOGY (pulmonologist). A pulmonologist deals with diseases affecting lungs, trachea, bronchi, diaphragm and pathologies that derive from them. Pneumology also deals with other health problems such as cough, sleep apnea, respiratory failure, chest pain, among others.
This medical specialty treats very different diseases such as ASTHMA, CANCER, CYSTIC FIBROSIS (mucoviscidosis) and CHRONIC BRONCHITIS. A pulmonologist also deals with the control and follow-up of smoking and tobacco addiction through smoking cessation programs and treatments.
RESPIRATORY PHYSIOTHERAPY
RESPIRATORY PHYSIOTHERAPY (FTR) is a physiotherapy specialty dedicated to the prevention, treatment and stabilization of respiratory dysfunctions or alterations, whose general objective is to improve regional pulmonary ventilation, gas exchange, respiratory muscle function, dyspnea, exercise tolerance, and health-related quality life (HRQL). It is constituted by a series of specialized techniques and procedures for the functional diagnostic evaluation of the respiratory system and by therapeutic intervention techniques of airway obstruction, respiratory re-education and re-adaptation to the effort.
Respiratory physiotherapy is a low cost therapeutic method and of proven for the treatment of diseases that affect chronically to the respiratory system (COPD, asthma, cystic fibrosis, neuromuscular diseases), acute processes (pneumonia, lung abscess) or very complex surgical interventions (Lung, heart and liver transplants as well as other cardiac or chest interventions).
